Discipline vs. Motivation
Discipline is the practice of training yourself to follow rules or a code of behavior, often with consequences when those standards are not met. It is about doing what needs to be done, even when it is uncomfortable or inconvenient.
Motivation is the reason or reasons that give you the desire and willingness to do something. It is the spark that gets you excited about your goals and pushes you to take action.
Why Discipline and Motivation Matter
No matter what you are doing or trying to accomplish, you will always need motivation. Motivation keeps you inspired and moving forward. Without discipline, however, motivation can fade. Discipline is what carries you through when motivation is low. It requires a no excuse attitude and a commitment to making your actions a priority.
If you are constantly procrastinating or putting tasks off for later, it becomes nearly impossible to achieve your goals. Every task needs to be treated as though it has purpose, because it does.
How Discipline Supports Consistency
One of the best ways I stay disciplined is by time blocking everything that needs to be done in my day. Every appointment is scheduled. Follow-ups, writing thank you notes, making and delivering pop bys, meetings, showings, listing appointments, doctor’s appointments, hair appointments, and my kids’ appointments are all on my calendar. When tasks are visible and scheduled, they become priorities. This allows everything to get done without being moved, interrupted, canceled, or rescheduled.
The Power of Consistency
No matter what you are working toward, consistency is essential. This is where discipline and motivation truly come together. You cannot achieve success or greatness if you give up when things do not work immediately. Real progress takes time, and in many cases, it takes about 90 days before you start seeing meaningful results.
Trust the Process and Keep Showing Up
Whatever new task or habit you are trying to build, you need to work at it consistently. Show up every day. Be present. Stay committed. During those 90 days, you can evaluate what is working and make adjustments to improve, but do not stop altogether.
Start Before You Feel Ready
Do not be afraid to start. You do not need everything figured out or perfected before you begin. Taking action and putting yourself out there is far more powerful than waiting for the perfect moment. You can always refine your approach, your idea, or your marketing along the way.
Get started. Stay consistent. Stay disciplined. Results will follow, and when they do, they will fuel your motivation even more.
